Frank and to the Point (April 2014)
The mission of First Baptist Nashville is to continue the life and work of Jesus Christ from downtown. We are doing that in a number of ways and your faithfulness in giving, showing up, participating with us, inviting friends and others to special events, looking for guests each week, and praying for your church and staff makes it all possible. Thank you for being such a great church! Summer is just about here and with it come some of the most important events on our calendar.
First Baptist Nashville’s Churchwide Picnic is Sunday, May 25, at the Joe C. Davis YMCA Outdoor Center. We’ll have lots of delicious food, fun for everyone, great music in the evening, and a word of blessing to help us launch into a busy summer. Save the date, see the information on the front page of this Evangel, and plan to join us for an exciting summer kick-off.
Youth Choir Mission Tour, Youth Camp, CentriKid Camp, Vacation Bible School, High School Senior Mission Trip to Haiti, the Canadian Baptist Seminary Mission Trip, the Family Mission Trip to East Tennessee, and Music Arts Camp are just some of the highlights for the summer of 2014. Each of these opportunities provides us with the chance to meet new friends with whom we can share the message of Christ. It’s impossible to say who benefits the most from events like these, those we go to serve, or those who go and grow in their faith. Why don’t you find a mission trip or an event where you can serve this summer and help us decide!
During the summer months, I’ll be preaching from the life of Elijah. His role in Jesus’ transfiguration is significant and reminds us that as a man of faith he was greatly respected hundreds of years after his ministry was over. Elijah found God’s faithfulness to be sufficient when the darkness of depression nearly did him in. He lived and served God faithfully even when it was not convenient or popular to do so. He stood his ground in the face of opposition even though he was hopelessly outnumbered. You’ll discover fresh insights to help you grow stronger in your faith as you worship with us this summer. If you are going to be away, you’ll find us online (firstbaptistnashville.org/streaming) each week. I encourage you to plug in with us for this time of study every Sunday morning this summer.
Pastor Rick Warren released The Daniel Plan earlier this year and First Baptist has offered several small group studies of The Daniel Plan to encourage us in this Year of Health. I’m preaching three sermons in May that are inspired by some of the biblical concepts you will find in The Daniel Plan. Healthy Habits, Healthy Thoughts, and Healthy Relationships simply strengthen our witness and enrich our journey in life. We all need to give attention from time to time to the body, mind, and spirit disciplines that help us grow in Christ’s image. Join us in May as we look at these components to being healthy as we worship together.
